NAIROBI/DAR ES SALAAM: The U.S.-led military exercise Justified Accord 2026 began this week in Kenya and Tanzania, bringing together around 1,500 personnel from Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, the United States and other partner nations.

The exercise is led by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) and runs until March 13. It aims to enhance readiness and strengthen regional cooperation against shared security threats, including terrorism.

In Kenya, activities include a multinational live-fire drill, a command post exercise integrating special operations and conventional forces, air-to-ground coordination and defensive cyber operations in Nairobi and Isiolo.

In Tanzania, training focuses on crisis response and expeditionary readiness, featuring a bilateral field exercise on jungle warfare and countering improvised explosive devices, as well as a medical readiness programme supporting local communities.

The exercise also includes technology demonstrations linking commercial defence innovations with military users, with a focus on counterterrorism and unmanned aerial systems.

Officials said the drill underscores a broader push for partner-led security cooperation in East Africa.
