DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has pledged continued cooperation with Zambia to strengthen the longstanding relations between the two countries and advance development efforts for the benefit of their people.
President Samia made the commitment while congratulating Zambia’s President-elect Hakainde Hichilema on his re-election for a second term following the August 13, 2026 presidential election, in which 14 candidates contested the presidency.
“On behalf of the government and people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I congratulate you, Your Excellency, on your victory,” President Samia said.
She said Mr Hichilema’s victory reflected the confidence Zambians had placed in his leadership and reaffirmed Tanzania’s readiness to work closely with Zambia during his second term.
President Samia said continued collaboration between the neighbouring countries would help strengthen their longstanding relationship, promote development and improve the welfare of their citizens.
She also wished Mr Hichilema good health and success as he begins his second term in office.
Tanzania and Zambia have deep historical, economic and social ties, with cooperation spanning trade, transport, energy and infrastructure.
A major symbol of the relationship is the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA), which was constructed through cooperation between Tanzania and Zambia with support from China.
The railway continues to facilitate the movement of goods and people between the two countries while providing Zambia with an alternative route for international trade.
The two countries also cooperate through regional and continental organisations, including the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU).
