DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is scheduled officially reopen the Kariakoo Main Market in Dar es Salaam on February 8, 2026.

The announcement was made by the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, who also urged residents of the region to attend the market reopening in large numbers.

Chalamila further called on all traders who had blocked the market’s access roads to clear them, allowing business activities to return to normal.

Tanzania, EU pledge deeper ties on trade and security

The regional commissioner made the statement today, Friday, February 6, 2026, during a press briefing in Dar es Salaam.

It is important to recall that Kariakoo Main Market was destroyed by a fire on November 15, 2025, an incident that resulted in several deaths, numerous injuries, and extensive property damage. The upcoming reopening marks a significant step toward restoring business operations and normal life in the market.
