ARUSHA: Tanzania and Zambia have reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced defence and security cooperation in response to evolving regional and global threats.
Speaking at the 4th Session of the Tanzania-Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security in Arusha, Tanzania’s Defence Minister Dr Rhimo Nyansaho said terrorism, cross-border organised crime and trafficking require sustained vigilance and coordinated strategies.
The commission operates within the broader framework of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which promotes collective security and intelligence sharing across member states.
Zambia’s Acting Defence Minister Jacob Mwiimbu said crimes such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, illegal migration and illegal mining pose risks to economic development and regional stability.
“No single country can effectively address these challenges in isolation,” he said, emphasising harmonised policy and operational responses.
Security analysts note that strengthened bilateral cooperation contributes to broader continental efforts to combat extremism and safeguard trade corridors critical to southern Africa’s economy.
