Kiswahili’s global rise in focus as Zanzibar hosts regional language milestone

Zanzibar: Zanzibar is hosting the 10th anniversary of the East African Kiswahili Commission, highlighting Kiswahili’s evolution from regional lingua franca to language of diplomacy, trade and digital innovation.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Union government and the East African Community (EAC), marks a decade of coordinated language policy among member states.

Minister for Information, Arts, Culture and Sports Dr Riziki Pembe Juma described the anniversary as both a celebration and a strategic reflection point.

“In an era of digital transformation and economic competition, Kiswahili must evolve beyond its historical roots to become a driver of development,” she said.

Spoken by more than 200 million people across Africa, Kiswahili has gained international visibility in recent years, including its recognition by the United Nations as an official language for select communications.

The two-day programme features keynote addresses, book exhibitions and creative showcases, with delegations attending from across the EAC region.

Officials say the language is increasingly viewed not only as a cultural symbol but as a tool for regional integration, education and the knowledge economy.
