DAR ES SALAAM: Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has highlighted the role of international faith-based events in promoting moral values, intercultural dialogue and Tanzania’s global visibility.

Speaking at the International Holy Quran Competition held at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Mwinyi said such gatherings go beyond contest and recognition.

“These competitions are not merely about winning,” he said. “They uphold our nation’s dignity and promote strong moral foundations among young people.”

The event, organised by Al Hikma Foundation, attracted participants from several continents, including Uganda, Canada, Sweden, Réunion and New Zealand, reflecting the global reach of Quranic recitation and scholarship traditions.

Tanzania upbeat on church role

International judges oversaw the competition to ensure compliance with recognised standards of Tajweed (recitation) and Hifdh (memorisation), reinforcing its credibility.

Observers note that religious and cultural exchanges are increasingly viewed as instruments of soft diplomacy, fostering mutual understanding and strengthening international ties.

Mwinyi also attended the 22nd International Quran Tajweed Competition at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre, which brought together contestants from more than 12 countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
