HANDENI: Tanzania’s Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has issued a stern warning to contractors, demanding stricter accountability in the execution of publicly funded projects.
During an inspection of the Mkata power substation project in Handeni District, Nchemba said payments must reflect verified work and warned against diversion of funds.
“We want to see value for money in every project,” he said.
The substation and associated transmission lines are part of a wider effort to expand electricity access and support industrial growth.
The government has allocated substantial resources to rural electrification, with thousands of hamlets already connected.

Nchemba also highlighted irregularities in health and vocational training projects, including substandard construction materials and wasted cement supplies.
He directed anti-corruption authorities to investigate and ensure accountability.
The prime minister said tighter monitoring of infrastructure projects is critical to sustaining economic growth, improving service delivery and strengthening public trust.
As Tanzania accelerates infrastructure development in energy, healthcare and education, officials say improved governance and enforcement will be central to maximising returns on public investment.
