DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania: THE Tanzanian government said it has taken concrete measures to utilize Kiswahili as a tool for enhancing economic benefits in international relations while also increasing its use as a diplomatic language at the regional and global forums.
This was revealed today, February 6, 2026, by the Director of the Department of Global Strategies and Politics at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mr Thobias Makoba, during his meeting with the Resident Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Tanzania, Michel Toto, to discuss strategies for strengthening cooperation between the Ministry and the organization.
The discussions were held at the Ministry’s Sub-Offices in Dar es Salaam, where Ambassador Makoba expressed appreciation to UNESCO for its continued cooperation with the Tanzanian government.
He emphasized the importance of expanding this collaboration, particularly in promoting and developing the Kiswahili language so that it can be used as an official language in international activities and conferences.
Mr Makoba further outlined the government’s efforts to take concrete measures to utilize Kiswahili as a tool for enhancing economic benefits in international relations, as well as increasing its use as a diplomatic language in regional and international forums at all levels.
On his part, the UNESCO envoy, Mr Toto,said UNESCO aims to further strengthen cooperation with Tanzania in order to support the implementation of the National Development Vision 2050, which seeks to transform the country into one with a strong economy, improved public welfare, and sustainable development.
Toto added that in achieving this objective, UNESCO will continue to uphold the principles of national unity and solidarity, a move that will help safeguard peace and strengthen the positive relationship between UNESCO and Tanzania.
