AKOBO: U.N. humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher warned on Tuesday of a deteriorating crisis in South Sudan during a visit to a hospital in the conflict-affected town of Akobo.
Fletcher said recent aid cuts were compounding the impact of renewed fighting in eastern Jonglei state, where the United Nations estimates around 280,000 people have been displaced since December.
Doctors reported being overwhelmed by casualties, including gunshot victims and displaced civilians.

The violence has largely pitted forces aligned with President Salva Kiir, predominantly from the Dinka ethnic group, against those loyal to former Vice-President Riek Machar, largely from the Nuer community.
Humanitarian agencies have urged sustained international support to prevent further deterioration in the world’s youngest nation.
