DAR ES SALAAM: More breast cancer patients are seeking medical care earlier, with the proportion arriving at an advanced stage reportedly dropping from 80 to 60 per cent, the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) has said.

ORCI Executive Director Dr Diwani Msemo attributed the decline to growing public awareness, less fear of stigma and a greater willingness among patients to seek medical attention.

He said awareness campaigns held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, alongside year-round efforts through traditional and social media, had helped encourage more people to come forward for screening and treatment.

The efforts are part of a wider push to promote early detection and improve access to care across the country.

“In the past, patients feared stigma and were misinformed that cancer was untreatable and a death sentence. Today, many are coming forward and making every effort to seek help early,” Dr Msemo said.

He added that previously, about 80 per cent of patients presented with stage three or four breast cancer, compared with the reported 60 per cent currently.

Early diagnosis can improve treatment options and outcomes, while helping reduce the financial burden on patients, their families and the government, he said.

Dr Msemo warned that delays in seeking medical attention could lead to more complex treatment and higher costs.

“When cancer is detected early, treatment is simpler and the chances of a good outcome improve. But when treatment is delayed, it becomes far more expensive and the prospects of recovery may diminish,” he said.

The government has also invested in expanding cancer-care infrastructure and services outside Dar es Salaam, including facilities in Mbeya and other regions, with the aim of improving access to specialised treatment.

Tanzania urges Africa to unite against rising cancer burden

Speaking on behalf of Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Florence Samizi said the government’s strategy focused on prevention and early intervention.

“President Samia emphasised that prevention is better than cure. Our main goal is to focus heavily on prevention and early detection before the disease reaches advanced stages, saving lives and reducing medical expenses,” said Dr Samizi.

Cancer survivors also urged the public to challenge misconceptions and seek medical attention whenever they notice unusual changes in their bodies.

Ms Lilian Kabengula said she sought medical attention after noticing changes in her body while exercising.

“I didn’t waste any time. I went to the hospital, received proper treatment, and today I am doing well. I urge the public not to be misled by traditional healers, but to go straight to the hospital,” she said.

The Director of Safari Yangu Foundation, Ms Kelvina Kusigwa, who is also a cancer survivor, said she began treatment at ORCI and completed it within eight months.

She urged the public to seek professional medical care and learn more about the different forms of cancer and their treatment options.

The public is also encouraged to maintain healthy habits, including regular physical activity and a balanced diet, while avoiding tobacco and alcohol.
