GEITA: GEITA Municipality has more than doubled its revenue collection in just four years, surging from 12bn/- in 2021/22 to 27bn/- in 2025/26, as a booming mining industry, expanding agriculture and growing business activity fuel a rapid economic transformation across the municipality.

Geita Municipal Council Director, Mr Yefred Myenzi, said yesterday that the growth reflects the municipality’s rapid economic transformation and increasing investment across key sectors.

“As economic activities expand, the council’s revenue also increases as Geita town continues to grow rapidly,” Mr Myenzi said while outlining the municipality’s economic and revenue performance.

He said rising gold production, alongside growth in agriculture, livestock keeping and commerce, had broadened the council’s revenue base and strengthened its capacity to finance development projects.

The council has now set an ambitious target of collecting 30bn/- in the next financial year.

Mr Myenzi said achieving the target will require expanding revenue sources while sealing loopholes that contribute to revenue losses.

“We need to expand our revenue sources and ensure that all loopholes that could lead to revenue losses are effectively controlled,” he said.

The municipality’s rapid expansion is also reshaping its skyline, with construction emerging as another indicator of economic growth.

Council statistics show that more than 200 houses are being built annually, while demand for rental accommodation, commercial premises and multi-storey buildings continues to increase.

“For the first time, by September this year, I had issued more than 10 permits for the construction of multi-storey buildings. This had never happened before, as many people used to build ordinary houses,” Mr Myenzi said.

He said many of the new developments are being converted into hotels, rental apartments and commercial buildings, reflecting growing private-sector confidence in the municipality.

According to Mr Myenzi, the increasing number of residential and commercial buildings demonstrates Geita’s transition into a more vibrant urban centre, where investments are creating jobs, stimulating business activity and improving the town’s appearance.

“If you go to the centre of Dar es Salaam, you will see how attractive it is because of the presence of such buildings. Even someone who visited Geita Municipality several years ago and comes today can see hotels and multi-storey buildings beginning to emerge,” he said.

Mr Myenzi said the trend shows that Geita is steadily moving beyond its traditional dependence on conventional trade and residential development into an emerging investment destination attracting businesses across multiple sectors.
