DAR ES SALAAM: Religious leaders in Tanzania have been urged to take a leading role in promoting reconciliation and national unity following the expected release of findings from a government-appointed inquiry.
Analysts and faith leaders said the period after the report would mark a transition from investigation to healing, with religious institutions expected to guide communities through dialogue and reconciliation.
Rachel Yusuph of Tumaini University Dar es Salaam College (TUDARCO) said faith-based organisations wield considerable influence and should promote forgiveness and constructive engagement.
“Religious teachings emphasise unity and reconciliation, and these values are especially important at this stage,” she said.
She cautioned against the misuse of religious platforms to deepen divisions, noting that faith leaders play a significant role in shaping public attitudes.
Yusuph added that places of worship can serve as early warning platforms where tensions are identified and addressed before escalating.

The chairman of the Tanzania Community for Reconciliation and Peace (JMAT), Alhadi Mussa Salumu, said religious institutions share core values centred on human dignity and rights.
“A human being is a human being regardless of faith, and deserves respect, protection and inclusion,” he said.
Other religious leaders echoed the call. Pastor Canon Isaya said faith teachings encourage timely conflict resolution, while Nuru Mruma of the National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA) described the moment as a critical opportunity for national healing.
He welcomed the government’s decision to establish the inquiry, expressing confidence that its findings would help guide reconciliation efforts.
“We believe the recommendations will provide direction for the country to move forward as one community,” he said.
Stakeholders said religious leaders, given their reach and credibility, are well positioned to foster peaceful coexistence and support long-term stability as Tanzania navigates a sensitive but constructive phase of national reflection.
