NEW YORK: TANZANIA has renewed its appeal for an end to the conflict in Gaza, calling for the protection of civilians, unhindered humanitarian assistance and renewed diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting peace in the Middle East.

Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi made the call on Tuesday while delivering Tanzania’s statement on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

He said Tanzania remained concerned by the prolonged conflict and the humanitarian suffering in Gaza and across the wider Middle East, stressing the need for urgent efforts to protect civilians and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

“We continue to call for the protection of civilians, unhindered humanitarian assistance and renewed diplomacy towards lasting peace,” said Mr Ndejembi.

He reaffirmed Tanzania’s support for a two-state solution that would enable Israel and Palestine to coexist peacefully and securely in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

The Vice-President also reiterated Tanzania’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, while stressing that a sustainable settlement should uphold the dignity, security and legitimate aspirations of both Palestinians and Israelis.

“We have been consistent on this for the past 50 years. For us, this is a matter of our foreign principle,” he said.

Mr Ndejembi was speaking during the General Debate, which brings together world leaders to discuss major international issues, including peace and security, sustainable development, climate change and reform of the United Nations.

The conflict in Gaza featured prominently in the debate, with several leaders pressing for an end to the humanitarian crisis and a return to diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a political settlement.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in what was described as his final General Assembly address as Secretary-General, urged countries to uphold international law, protect civilians and revive efforts towards a two-state solution.

He also expressed concern over the scale of destruction and loss of life in Gaza, while warning that continued violence, displacement and settlement expansion in the West Bank were undermining prospects for peace.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also called on more countries to recognise the State of Palestine and urged stronger international pressure to bring the conflict to an end.

The issue took centre stage again when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the General Assembly, defending Israel’s military campaign and saying the country “must finish the job” against Hamas in Gaza.

His address was met by a walkout by representatives from dozens of countries, leaving sections of the General Assembly chamber empty as diplomats demonstrated their opposition to Israel’s conduct of the war.
